Media Representation of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Czech Republic from the Perspective af Survivors and Non-participants

This thesis explores how the Czech mainstream news media portrays sexual and gender-based violence from the perspective of people with different experiences and attitudes towards it. This includes survivors, relatives of survivors, those who are sensitive to the topic, and those who are skeptical or have a negative view towards the portrayal of sexual violence as a topic. The theoretical framework for this thesis is gender theory and cultural studies, specifically interpretive communities, which examine how the media influences our perceptions of gender and society. The research is qualitative and uses grounded theory practices, which involves open and axial coding to analyze how people with different experiences and attitudes towards sexual and gender-based violence perceive the way Czech media portrays the topic. This includes evaluating the portrayal, the emotions it evokes, and suggesting possible changes. Using the vignette technique, specific examples of media content on the topic of sexual violence are analyzed, and specific changes and adjustments are suggested. The Evolution of Media Portrayal of Slovaks and Slovakia in the Czech Press between 1993 and 2018

This diploma thesis explores the evolution of the way Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press after the 1st of January 1993. For this purpose, it aims to answer the question: 25 years after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, what has changed in the way the Czech print media perceive Slovaks and Slovakia? The way Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press is always reconstructed using the methods of quantitative and qualitative content analysis, namely in selected three- month periods in the years 1993, 1998, 2004, and 2008. These periods are related to events which for Slovaks and Slovakia, following the dissolution of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic, are generally perceived as significant. It is essential to understand we are interested in Slovaks and Slovakia as seen by the Czech press. Based on the performed content analyses and their results respectively, the diploma thesis characterizes the ways Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press in the given periods. These findings are then compared to capture the overall evolution of media portrayal of Slovaks and Slovakia in the Czech press in the course of time. The empirical evidence serves as a base for formulating conclusions and validating the research hypothesis.

Framing Journalism in US Films

The aim of this thesis is to determine how film makers portray the work of news rooms and journalists in American films. It will analyse movies filmed between the years 1999 and 2019 that were made based on real events, and that are not regarded as documents. The first part of this thesis will discuss attributes of journalism which are attractive for film makers, as well as discuss types and stereotypes in relation to journalists and their work. The second part of this thesis will analyse a sample of movies made between the years 1999 and 2019, with the aim to determine which attributes of journalism were attractive for film making and how the analysed films depict journalists and media. The thesis will also touch upon the differences between the narratives of the analysed films and the real events that they were based on.

The Media Portrayl of Czech attendance at International Exhibition in Montreal 1967 in contemporary press

Master diploma thesis "The Media Portrayal of Czechoslovak attendance at International Exhibition in Montreal 1967 in contemporary press" intends to show media picture of Czechoslovak attendance at Expo 1967, through the use of analysis of selected daily press and social and cultural journals. It sets Czechoslovak attendance into political, cultural, ideological and media context and outline history and development of International Exhibition. Thesis also introduces Montreal exhibition and present information about attendance of Czechoslovakia. On this foundations arise the second part of the thesis, which propounds the media picture of this event in selected contemporary press and using analysis of self-mindedness that refers to rate of statement of facts and objectivity. Selected press and journals were monitored for a period of eight months and by researching there was considered form o reporting, ideological affection and general focus of selected press about this event. Important considered elements were also influence of freeing atmosphere of second half of sixties and fact, that exhibition took place in capitalistic state. Outcome of all these circumstances is media picture of this event, which is shown in conclusion of thesis.

Portrayal of the "Megxit" case in the British media

The British Royal Family is a traditional institution that has a significant influence on social and political events in the United Kingdom. That is why the scandals of its members are closely monitored by the media. This Bachelor thesis describes the media image of one of the biggest scandals involving the British royal family of today in selected British online newspapers of different orientation. The term 'Megxit' has been adopted for this decision of Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex and his wife Meghan. The paper briefly defines the selected media, terms and introduces the main parties involved in the case. In the research part, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis, it discusses the manner and intensity with which the scandal was covered in the selected mainstream media in comparison with the official information provided by spokespeople of the members of the British Royal Family in the first two weeks after the first press release informing the public of the couple's decision to leave the institution. The emotional tone of published articles and adherence to the IPSO Editors' Code of Practice are also observed.

Representation of anarchocapitalism in Czech media

The goal of this diploma thesis is to conduct a thorough research of the Czech public debate on anarcho-capitalism and anarcho-capitalists through media communication, to analyze the media representation of anarcho-capitalism using quantitative content analysis and to provide a momentary capture of speakers, actors, topics and contexts. The study first focuses on the theoretical basis of anarcho-capitalism, its practice in the Czech Republic and the theory of portraying reality in the media from a social constructivist point of view. Then it focuses on research of media reports on anarcho-capitalism or anarcho-capitalists published in the Czech print and online media from the beginning of 2010 to the end of 2020. The results show how the representation of anarcho-capitalism in the media has changed over time and present the main topics and contexts with which anarcho-capitalism was mentioned in the Czech media.

Portrayal of Gabriela Koukalová in the press from January 2017 to June 2019

This thesis deals with the analysis of Gabriela Koukalová's media portrayal in selected print media in the period January 2017 - June 2019. This period was determined due to changes in Gabriela Koukalová's professional focus, as early 2017 she was a successful biathlete who has many victories from international competitions. She stopped racing in autumn of 2017 and due to the controversial biography she published in 2018, she announced retirement from her biathlon career in 2019. The aim is to find out whether the media image of Gabriela Koukalová at a time when she was a top biathlete differs from the media image that she had when she stopped competing. The theoretical part presents the role of the media in society and the theoretical definition of the construction of the media image. This section also includes mediasport, and media portrayal of biathlon and women in sports. The methodological part of the work describes the chosen analysis methods and the process of data recording. The analytical part of the work is devoted to the interpretation of the obtained results.

Euroscepticism in Czech and German daily newspapers - analysis of the media portrayal of GDPR and EU

This thesis analyzes how the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the European Union was portrayed in selected Czech and German printed media throughout the year 2018 and investigates whether Euroscepticism - in its widest sense - expresses itself within the articles. The research on Euroscepticism in media so far has largely focused on "historic" events and "significant" questions of the European integration, not on technical-legal topics, i.e. topics with presumably lesser impact on the future course of the European project. An analysis of Euroscepticism in media texts dealing with a specific EU legislative act has so far been lacking. The paper at hand therefore examines whether Euroscepticism manifests itself also in connection to such topics. As denying and/or criticizing EU's policies is accepted by most academics as an expression of Euroscepticism, next to denying the EU as such, this study defines Euroscepticism as any criticism on part of the EU and the GDPR, since this regulation can be understood as embodiment of EU's policy on data protection. Far-right Parties in Czech Media before 2017 Parliament Elections

Topic of the thesis is the image of Czech far-right parties in Czech media prior to Elections to Chamber of Deputies in 2017. Aim of the thesis is to investigate how media displays far-right parties prior to the Elections in 2017, what the topics of media coverage are in regards of far- right and how the topics changed in the Elections in 2017 comparing with Elections in 2013. Using quantitative content analysis and theory of agenda-setting the thesis monitors texts with far-right topics in national daily newspapers Mladá fronta DNES, Lidové noviny, Právo and Hospodářské noviny in the periods prior to the Elections to Chamber of Deputies in 2017 and 2013. Author also uses qualitative analysis of opinion texts based on theory of framing. The parties followed in thesis are chosen based on definition of far-right by Cas Mudde and definition of right wing populism by Hans-Georg Betz.
